An unusual (possibly unique) Victorian locket.
It’s fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1876 and is decorated to the front with a set of cricket stumps and a bat. This motif has been hand-cut from silver sheet and has hand engraved details
I have had examples of these lockets before – small, with Birmingham hallmarks and applied decoration. Other subjects have included horse riding and marriage. I think the designs could be commissioned by the original customer
The famous Wisden Cricket Almanac was first published in 1864, so this locket must have belonged to an early enthusiast
The locket measures 1.8cm long, not including the rings
It’s 1.8cm across at its widest and is 5mm deep
It weighs 2.3cm
It’s in good antique condition
There are lots of dents on the back, but the front is reasonably clean – one small dent and fine, soft scratches
The locket opens easily and snaps shut securely
The box is for display only
