This is an exceptional Victorian locket
It is of the best quality and is in superb condition.
Made from solid sterling silver, it carries a full UK hallmark for Birmingham 1879
The front of the locket is decorated in the Aesthetic Movement style, with Japanese foliage – bamboo and grasses – and bands of decorative engraving
On to this has been mounted a 3-dimensional, realistically modelled owl.
Its feathers are finely engraved, and from its elongated shape I believe it’s a barn owl
The decorated area sits within a triple frame of twisted and flat wire.
The edge of the locket is scalloped
Inside it retains both its original frames
It has been fitted with maroon velvet and clear plastic windows
The locket measures 4.7cm x 3.8cm x 0.8cm deep
The bale adds 1.4cm to the length
Inside, the locket windows are 4.1cm by 3.2cm
The locket weighs 22.8g
The locket is in excellent antique condition
There is no damage or repair
There is light surface surface wear throughout but no significant scratches or dents
The locket opens easily and snaps shut securely
The owl is attached with a pin and loop. This means the owl swivels. This has left a wear mark. He could be secured in place if desired – I quite like the swivel
